Why truecaller knows your name even when you dont use it

Truecaller application has become a hit among African countries.
Nigeria, Kenya and Egypt are top African countries with fraud related spam calls and messages according to Truecaller.

The caller-ID and call-blocking app has gained widespread popularity worldwide since it was released in 2009.

The Swedish-owned company behind the service, True Software Scandinavia AB, reports that it now has over three billion telephone numbers in its database and over 100 million Google Play Store downloads for its Android app alone.

The company is currently searching for offices in Africa given its popularity in the continent.

Truecaller's massive adoption in Nigeria could be partly blamed on the Nigerian Communication Commission's lack of will to stop spam callers and messagers in their tracks.
For those who do not use the app, have you ever wondered how your phone number is available on Truecaller, despite never installing the app?

Here's how it works?
This means that even if only your person has your contact information in the device address book without your permission, as soon as you install the Truecaller application, your contact information is now part of the Truecaller global database.
Truecaller does not immediately set up contact information, as they are not users (but users can search on your behalf), but as soon as you call any Truecaller user, the caller ID function will query the database and recognize you indirectly "unlocking" your identity.

Truecaller Privacy Policy
As a part of the Truecaller Application Service Terms and Privacy Policy, as a user, you must have access to the entire address book, which will then add your contact details to your global database. This is called Crowdsourcing.
But this is not the only method by which Truecaller collects contact details of people and organizations such as Ted Nelson, chief commercial director who further explained to Africa.
"We also gather and organize phone numbers from various sources, including white and yellow sites around the world, and social media channels. After collecting information, Truecaller triggers it through different layers of verification (our proprietary algorithms) to make sure that contact data we organize it right. "
Truecaller through various methods can be integrated into various social media platforms and refine the data it has already transferred to its contact database. This may include things like matching a phone number name, transferring a photo profile, setting a location, etc.
